Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the TBI Waiver Program?
The TBI Waiver is a New York State Medicaid program that provides home- and community-based services to eligible individuals with a traumatic brain injury. The program helps participants live in the community rather than in a nursing facility.
Do I need to be living in a nursing home to qualify?
No. The program may serve individuals who are currently living in a nursing facility as well as those living in the community who are at risk of institutionalization because of their brain injury and care needs.
Do I need a documented traumatic brain injury?
Yes. Applicants must have documentation of a qualifying traumatic brain injury and meet the program’s other clinical, financial, and eligibility requirements.
Can I keep my Medicaid benefits if I enroll in the TBI Waiver?
Yes. The TBI Waiver is a Medicaid-funded program. Enrollment does not mean that you lose your Medicaid coverage.
Is there a cost to join the program?
Eligible Medicaid recipients generally do not pay out of pocket for approved services provided through the TBI Waiver.
How long does it take to begin receiving services?
The timeline varies depending on the applicant’s circumstances, available documentation, required assessments, service planning, and state approval. Our team will guide you through each step and help prevent avoidable delays.
